Welcome to Joseph Douglas Homes‘ new model in Lisbon – The Southampton. Located in the town of Lisbon, Joseph Douglas Southampton Model is one level, Modern Prairie style home with three bedrooms and two and a half baths.
But first, let’s get to know a bit more about Lisbon, Wisconsin.
The Town of Lisbon
With a population of just over 10,500 residents, Lisbon’s small town is located in north-central Waukesha County, directly west of Milwaukee. When you live in Lisbon, you can enjoy living the small-town life, yet still have all the nearby big city’s convenient amenities. With a variety of accessible highways and expressways, getting to Milwaukee is only approximately a 30-minute drive.
However, you don’t have to drive to downtown Milwaukee for fun. The growing city of Waukesha and most of Waukesha County is also filled with great shopping, casual and high-end restaurants, hospitals, cultural centers, and more, to keep your family entertained and well taken care of.
Just as importantly, according to the most recent census, 40.1% of households in Lisbon are families with children under the age of 18. This makes the town of Lisbon an ideal location for growing families, even if you work in Milwaukee. It also makes the Joseph Douglas Homes’ new model in Lisbon a perfect home.
Recreation and Community in Lisbon
You can play at three different local golf courses throughout the surrounding area, and more than 170 acres of park land for baseball and soccer, hiking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors. The Town Board is committed to strengthening the community by expanding and maintaining its recreation facilities and green spaces. They strive to meet local citizens’ needs while staying fiscally responsible. The Board believes that offering year-round recreational activities, open spaces, and preserving parks enhances Lisbon’s economic desirability and contributes to its residents’ health and welfare.
Lisbon offers several town activities to encourage better health, good neighbors, and community stability and satisfaction. For example, there are softball tournaments held all summer and Winterfest, the Easter Egg Extravaganza, and the Lisbon Community Festival each summer.
The Lisbon School System
Lisbon families with children are also fortunate to be part of two school systems that are very desirable and award-winning. For example, the local high school has a 99.3% graduation rate and has received a score of excellence in several key areas. The Hamilton School District is home to Lisbon, and part of the Arrowhead School District includes some local schools.
Modern Prairie Style Architecture
Joseph Douglas Homes’ new model in Lisbon, “The Southampton,” has been built in the Modern Prairie style of architecture. But what does that mean? What makes this design so different from other forms of architecture?
Interestingly, the Prairie style is known as the first American form of architecture and was founded by Frank Lloyd Wright. It came about with his 1901 building plans: “A House in a Prairie Town.” Like the Arts and Crafts movement, Prairie-style architecture is a way of designing and building a structure to reflect its natural surroundings. The home’s exterior respects the environment and blends into the landscape with clean and simple horizontal lines, natural materials, and earth tone colors.
In the home’s interior, a Prairie-style residence is much less fussy and fancy than, for example, a Victorian house with all of its bric-a-brac, separate rooms, heavily carved wood, lots of chintz drapery, and overstuffed furniture. In the early 1900s, after decades of building homes with Victorian architecture, many builders, architects, and homeowners were tired of that excessive and intricate style of design and décor. They wanted something with clean and simple lines.
Therefore, Wright’s followers created the Prairie style, and spaces became functional, open, and with one room flowing into the next. The “Modern” Prairie style is an even newer adaptation of the original 1901 version. It has a fresh and appropriate vibe for today’s modern American families with multipurpose rooms, fewer walls, uncovered windows, and light, soft colors.
Prairie-style architecture’s basic foundation is that a dwelling should easily and comfortably function for its residents without being too elaborate or overly decorated.
Characteristics of Prairie Style Architecture
Wright thought of a Prairie style house as a structure that should replicate the American Midwest prairies’ flat, bare landscape. Frank Lloyd Wright and his colleagues incorporated several characteristics into their designs.
Some of these are:
• Handmade Craftsmanship. Prairie style homes integrate many clean lines and unadorned woodwork and glass subtly built into the structure without being overly detailed or excessive. The woodwork is kept simple, so the wood grain (usually oak) will show. Natural elements, such as stone fireplaces, shine in their pure form, and the mantels are never carved nor painted. There is quality craftsmanship throughout the entire home.
• Horizontal Lines. Most external surfaces are positioned horizontally, with gutter downspouts and other vertical elements typically hidden in these homes’ design. Roofs are generally long, horizontal, and do not have high peaks or multiple levels.
• Walls of Windows. Windows are large and often take up a complete wall in the great room. Sometimes, the windows have stained glass or other features such as bevels added to them. Natural light and outdoor views are essential to the feel of the Prairie style home.
• Open Concept Floorplans. The main room always includes an open living and dining room space with a kitchen close-by. The only places that are kept private are bedrooms and bathrooms.
• Inside to Outside Flow. Floor plans are based on the family members living both indoors and out. There is an intentional flow from inside to outside with sliding or French doors, sunrooms, and decks or front porches.
Keep these characteristics in mind as you tour the undeniably impressive Southampton home – the new Lisbon model from Joseph Douglas Homes.
The Southampton’s Main Living Space
The architecture of The Southampton is understated but classically beautiful. As you step onto the gracious covered front porch and into the welcoming foyer, you’ll notice the office/den (which could also be used as a home classroom) to your right. However, you can’t help but be drawn into the expansive main living center of the home. The entire space has beautiful hardwood floors and features a stunning corner stone fireplace. The area is large enough for hosting a great party yet cozy enough for just the two of you to enjoy a quiet evening in front of the fire. The great room has an abundance of natural sunlight due to the 10 ft. ceilings and two walls of windows, which also offers a panoramic view of the back yard. The living area’s openness flows to a large, airy kitchen and a sunny eating area to the left. The kitchen also features an island big enough to seat six people for more casual dining.
This chef’s kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances also boasts a large pantry for ample amounts of dry goods and small appliance storage and lots of counter space. Just steps from the kitchen are a powder room for guests, a generous laundry area, and a convenient mudroom. This area also leads to the entry of a spacious three-car garage. Ideal for your cars and all your equipment for yard work and outdoor fun.
Private Space in the Home
Behind the kitchen, through a more secluded entrance, lies the perfect master bedroom suite. With soft carpet underfoot, the sizable bedroom has space enough for a king-sized bed and a small sitting and conversation area. The rest of the suite consists of a deluxe master bath with a double sink and a large glass front shower and a fabulous walk-in clothes closet. Another wall of windows allows loads of natural sunlight to stream into the room.
On the opposite side of the great room, two lovely bedrooms share a full bathroom. These bedrooms also have ample walk-in closets, providing plenty of room for storage. Being separated from the master bedroom suite offers everyone a unique place for quiet and privacy.
A lower level can also be finished into a comfortable living area for added square footage and entertainment space for your children, or used as a workout room, a craft room, a home theatre, or additional storage. The possibilities are endless.
An Ideal Home
The Southhampton is an ideal home for families with children who enjoy entertaining, hosting family gatherings, and loving outside. There’s also additional space at the back of the house perfectly located for a screened-in porch or deck for indoor-outdoor living. Enjoy summer evenings with your friends and family, and avoid mosquitoes in a lovely screened-in porch. On crisp fall days, relax in the back yard around a fire pit and toast marshmallows with your children.
On the other hand, because everything is conveniently located all on one level, it’s also the ideal home for a retired couple looking to downsize and interested in aging in place. The extra bedrooms are for weekend visits from grandchildren!
